If you’re planning a trip to North Wales anytime soon then we definitely recommend visiting Lechwedd Deep Mine and taking the underground tour of the disused slate mine.
On the deep mine tour you will first board the steepest funicular train in the United Kingdom and descend over 500 ft into the hillside. During the tour you will hear the story of A young child and his family as they work the slate mines. You’ll see the techniques that the old miners would have originally used and you will even get to try them out if you wish.
On the deep mine tour you will visit various Chambers on different levels throughout the slate mine some bigger than others and some even flooded and you will learn about the rich history of the area has. North Wales is littered with disused slate mines and quarries, it was once one of the highest producing areas of slate in the United Kingdom.
You will learn about the conditions that the miners would have worked in, how they lived their lives and even get a demonstration how the slate is split and dressed ready to export all over the world.
Each slate cavern within Lechwedd Deep Mine has been kitted out with some great technology to make the tour more interesting. There are light shows, projected holograms, loudspeakers and more, it’s a truly fascinating place to visit and well with adding the Deep Mine tour to your itinerary.
Lechwedd Deep Mine just outside Blaenau Ffestiniog, you can easily get the by car and there is a free car park which is free of charge.
Take a coat or at least something warmer!
When we visited Lechwedd Deep Mine, I made the mistake of not taking a jacket. I would definitely recommend taking a jacket if you’re planning to visit Lechwedd Deep mine as is quite cold down there! I think the tourguide said around 7.5 Degrees celsius and we visited in the summer!
The lower levels of the Slate Mine at Lechwedd are flooded and inaccessible, the tour takes you though some of the upper levels which are not flooded. But you’ll see crystal clear flooded caverns, which in itself is an amazing sight.
There are other activities in the area such as zip lines the underground trampolines known as bounce below and even a mountain bike park.
